Kenya has partnered with Bitcoin miner Marathon Digital Holdings to monetize its underutilized energy resources, as announced by Marathon’s CEO Fred Thiel on X. The deal, signed in May 2024, aims to harness Kenya’s surplus energy for Bitcoin mining and tech development.
Kenya, known for pioneering M-PESA in 2007, continues its digital evolution with this new collaboration. Marathon will work with Kenya’s National Treasury and Ministry of Energy on the mining operations.
Kenya is a leading producer of geothermal power in Africa, yet much of this energy remains untapped. The partnership seeks to convert this surplus into revenue, boosting the economy and promoting energy efficiency.
President William Ruto highlighted the potential benefits, including job creation and establishing Kenya as a leader in sustainable energy and technology. This strategic move positions Kenya for long-term growth and innovation in the digital asset space.
