Kraken ‘actively reviewing’ USDT suspension in EU under MiCA regulation

Kraken, a major cryptocurrency exchange, is contemplating the delisting of the USDT stablecoin in the European Union, responding to the upcoming Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulations set to be enforced in July. This move follows a precedent set by OKX in March, marking a significant shift in how crypto exchanges operate within EU jurisdictions under new digital asset laws. A unique aspect of this situation is the direct impact of regulatory changes on the availability of specific cryptocurrencies, such as USDT, to European investors.

The MiCA regulation, a first of its kind, aims to create a harmonized legal framework for crypto assets across the EU, setting a notable precedent for the global cryptocurrency market. The rules, particularly around stablecoins, demonstrate the EU’s commitment to establishing a secure and regulated environment for digital assets, potentially increasing trust and stability in the crypto sector. The strategic review by Kraken underscores the broader industry’s move towards compliance and adaptation in anticipation of regulatory changes, highlighting the long-term importance of aligning with legal standards to ensure continued operation within the EU market.
