Japan’s Banks Launch Joint Stablecoin Initiative

Japan’s Major Banks Collaborate on Stablecoin Initiative

  • Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMBC), and Mizuho Financial Group plan to issue a stablecoin by the end of the financial year in March.
  • The banks will form a council to develop operational frameworks for the stablecoin issuance.
  • Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) has previously expressed support for this initiative.
  • Currently, yen-pegged tokens account for less than $50 million in the $311 billion stablecoin market.
  • The most notable yen-pegged token is JPYC, with a market cap of approximately $18 million.

The collaboration among these banks aims to enhance the presence of stablecoins in Japan, particularly as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party advocates for promoting yen-based digital assets.

With major banks entering the stablecoin space, this initiative could significantly impact the current landscape, where U.S. dollar tokens dominate with an overwhelming market share of over 84%. (Source)
