Switzerland Approves First Retail Bitcoin ETF

Switzerland’s financial regulator, FINMA, approved the country’s first retail spot bitcoin ETF on Oct. 20, 2026. It waived standard diversification rules, allowing the fund to hold only bitcoin, while requiring custody safeguards and investor disclosures. FINMA has not publicly identified the issuer, investment manager, ticker or launch date, so investors cannot yet identify a product to buy.

The fund will hold bitcoin directly, unlike existing cryptocurrency exchange-traded products structured as debt securities. FINMA cautioned that investors still face substantial price swings and potentially significant losses.
