Bitcoin developer and BIP-54 co-author Matt Corallo said the proposed “Great Consensus Cleanup” has an 80% chance of being Bitcoin’s next soft fork. First proposed in 2019, it has no formal timeline and has not been activated. It would address four vulnerabilities Corallo described as real but not urgent: poison blocks, time warp bugs, Merkle malleability and duplicate coinbase transactions.
LayerTwo Labs CEO Paul Sztorc criticized the proposal as “janitorial maintenance.” He said developers he surveyed expected it to be the next soft fork, with the earliest estimate in September 2027 and most estimates in 2028 or later.
