U.S. President Donald Trump said in a TIME interview that the government might take stakes in OpenAI and Anthropic. He described a possibility, not an agreed investment. Reports said OpenAI had discussed offering the government a 5% stake, while a source familiar with Anthropic told Reuters that it had not discussed government ownership with the administration.
Trump pointed to the government’s Intel investment as a possible model. Under a 2025 agreement, the government invested $8.9 billion for about 9.9% of Intel’s common stock, without board representation.
