Afghanistan’s Taliban-controlled government arrested eight cryptocurrency traders in Herat in May. They were jailed for 28 days for using crypto, despite a ban enacted by the Central Bank of Afghanistan in August 2022.
This ban resulted in the closure of over 30 crypto-related businesses and deemed digital currencies “haram” — forbidden in Islam. One trader, who earned a small commission selling USDT, expressed concerns about high living costs and the economy’s dire state. Another highlighted the difficulty of receiving money from abroad without crypto.
While the Taliban didn’t seize their assets, sources mentioned that other traders had their digital holdings confiscated and might face six months in jail. The ban on crypto has severely impacted financial access, showcasing the need for stable banking systems in Afghanistan.
The strategic importance of this event underscores the tension between emerging financial technologies and traditional regulatory frameworks in conflict zones.
