Discord making public chats searchable on Google

Discord said it will make content from Discoverable Servers available on web pages that search engines may find. The change covers public-directory servers with at least 1,000 members that do not require an invitation. From Nov. 16, each will have a web page that may summarize public-channel discussions; from mid-December, individual messages posted in eligible channels may appear in web search.

Messages posted before the rollout will not be included, and published messages will exclude usernames and avatars. The message-sharing feature will be off by default for teens and users in Australia, the EU, the European Economic Area, the UK, Canada, Brazil and South Korea. Other users can opt out in Data & Privacy settings, but opting out after launch protects only later messages. Discord says users must delete an eligible message to remove it, and search engines may retain cached copies; server administrators can also block publication by channel or server.
