Genesis Global can distribute billions to creditors: judge

Genesis Global, a digital assets lender that declared bankruptcy last year, has been authorized by a New York judge to pay out billions in cash and crypto to its creditors. This landmark ruling on May 17 enables the company to unlock customer assets frozen since November 2022. What sets this case apart is the substantial recovery rate for creditors, who could reclaim up to 77% of lent digital assets, a notable figure compared to similar bankruptcies.

The decision also addressed a challenge from Genesis’ parent company, Digital Currency Group, deeming its equity in Genesis practically valueless due to a multibillion-dollar shortfall. This outcome underscores the significance of prioritizing creditor claims in bankruptcy proceedings, especially in the volatile crypto market. With over $3.5 billion owed to its top 50 creditors, Genesis’ path to restitution marks a critical precedent for crypto lending and bankruptcy resolution.
