Hacked Freezer Epidemic Spreads Across Europe

Supermarkets in nine European countries reported refrigeration problems, including units in Estonia that reached 50°C. Investigators have not said whether these incidents are linked to the earlier attack in France. Swedish chains have not confirmed a cyberattack at their affected stores, and Finland’s Kesko has not ruled out network interference.

In France, Finance Minister Roland Lescure said on October 13 that about 700 of the country’s 10,000 supermarkets had been affected. France’s CERT-FR said hackers forced continuous defrost cycles that spoiled food and sparked fires at some stores. It reported numerous compromises of Danfoss and Copeland remote controllers, but said it was unclear which weaknesses attackers used. No group has claimed responsibility, and CERT-FR warned the campaigns were probably still ongoing.
