Ethereum Proposes Economic Zone to Unite L2s

New Framework Proposed to Unify Ethereum’s Layer-2 Ecosystem

  • Developers from Gnosis and Zisk, with support from the Ethereum Foundation, have introduced the “Ethereum Economic Zone” (EEZ) framework.
  • The EEZ aims to allow smart contracts on different rollups to execute synchronously across networks without using bridges.
  • Currently, over 20 active layer-2 networks hold nearly $40 billion in total value, with liquidity fragmented across platforms like Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism.
  • The initiative seeks to address the challenges of liquidity and infrastructure fragmentation within Ethereum’s scaling strategy.
  • An “EEZ Alliance” will be formed to coordinate standards and promote adoption as the ecosystem evolves.

The proposed EEZ framework is a response to ongoing concerns about Ethereum’s layer-2 fragmentation, which has resulted in split liquidity among various networks. The project aims to enhance interoperability and efficiency within the Ethereum ecosystem.

If successful, this initiative could significantly reduce duplication of resources across rollups while facilitating smoother transactions back to Ethereum. (Source)
